What does the Rockland County Legislature do?

As your Legislator, I am one of 17 representatives that make up the entire Legislative Branch of Rockland County Government.  In addition to formulating and passing county laws, our responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with the County Executive and his administration, the review and approval of County expenditures of over $100,000, participation in the county budget process, planning and review of public works, the county highways, the county hospital, environmental issues, the Sheriff's department and countless contract agencies that provide services to the people of Rockland County.

I am available to help anyone in my district or elsewhere in the county, with any government related issue that may arise.  If it is outside of the jurisdiction of the County Legislature, I will do my best to provide information to help get the problem addressed by the right person or agency.

The Legislature holds regular public meetings on the first and third Tuesday of every month, and various committees meet on other nights throughout each month.  The schedules are all posted on the county website at  http://rocklandgov.com/departments/county-legislature/  .  You are urged to come to any regular meeting and participate in the public comment portion of the evening.

How did I become a Legislator without an election and why?

January 6, 2014

County legislators are generally elected to serve a four year term.  I was appointed to fill the vacancy created when Ed Day was elected County Executive.   It was a privilege to be appointed by the unanimous vote of the legislature at the legislature's reorganizational meeting held on January 6, 2014.  My appointment will continue until December 31, 2014  at which point I will run for election to serve out the additional remaining year of the regular term.  In November 2015, all legislators will run for election as the regular four year term expires.
I sought the nomination and appointment to continue my service to the community.  My personal and business experience, legal training and my desire to see Rockland return to fiscal stability uniquely qualify me to address the concerns of our community.  I look forward to working with you and for you, and would be pleased to meet and discuss your issues in Rockland County.

My very busy first month

In my first month as your representative, I was very busy studying the budget, learning the details about the financial issues that led to our current financial crisis and working with my colleagues to restore fiscal stability to our County.   It has been an eye-opening experience and I am looking forward to facing some very challenging issues in the months ahead.

As noted below, I have sought out and obtained answers to some specific questions that I heard from friends and neighbors.  I am sure there are many other questions on your mind and I encourage you to reach out and contact me via email at kantrowb@co.rockland.ny.us or call the Legislature office at 845-(845) 638-5751.  If I am not available, my Constituent Services Representative, Amanda Roman, will do her best to help you and make sure that I get your message.
